It’s not a great big grandstanding star turn along the lines of Glenn Close in Sunset Boulevard (not that there’s anything wrong with that) – it’s simply a quietly luminous portrayal of an ordinary woman who is transformed by an encounter with something she finds beautiful.

And in terms of evoking what living through the depression might have felt like, there was more power in three minutes of Golda Rosheuvel channeling Bessie Smith and two minutes of Clare Burt singing Gershwin’s S’Wonderful than in any of Miller’s scenes, and it’s a rather odd sensation to find yourself watching a production of an Arthur Miller play in which the two things that stick out most clearly in your memory afterwards were not written by Arthur Miller. What you will remember – and he’s probably the reason you bought a ticket – is this production’s above-the-title star. Chavkin does an admirable job of keeping the action moving fluidly from scene to song to dance and back again, and there’s no faulting any of the individual performances, but you have to work to keep up. Read the Playbill.com story. Amber Aga, Clare Burt, and Golda Rosheuvel all give lovely performances as Rose Baum, and Golda Rosheuvel’s unblinking, unsentimental rendition of Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out is the most memorable thing in the entire production, but there’s a lot to keep track of here even without the triple-casting, and having the play’s three central characters played by … You’ll leave the theatre remembering Clare Burt’s face when she sings ‘I Don’t Need a Roof’, Matthew Seadon-Young’s final scenes, and (especially) Kelsey Grammer, but the score will have evaporated by the time you get to the tube, and Harmon’s direction might have evaporated before you’ve finished watching it. The play moves back and forth between the Baum family and scenes set elsewhere, from Manhattan boardrooms to a dive bar in Mississippi to a farm in the dustbowl; there’s a four-piece band at the side of the stage, dance sequences, a selection of period standards from the Great American Songbook, and even a dazzling solo tap dance from Ewan Wardrop as the CEO of General Electric. This production polarised its audiences, and there are people who wholeheartedly loathed it; anybody who walked into the Old Vic expecting a searing drama along the lines of Death of a Salesman or A View from the Bridge would have been courting disappointment, because that’s not what this play offers. Deal with it.). Directors include Evans, Nicole Charles, Paul Foster, Paul Miller, Daniel Hill, Holly Race Roughan, Lucy Betts, Richard Eyre, Kate Hewitt, Rachel Kavanaugh, Dale Rooks, and Jeremy Sams. And while there’s plenty to enjoy in this production, it’s also obvious why the play received the reception it did in its original Broadway production, and why it’s rarely revived. He’s charming, very funny, and has effortless stage presence and a better singing voice than you might expect. Note: Minor changes made on 17 May 2019 to the order of the paragraphs and to the spelling of Clare Burt’s name and the title of Our Ladies OF Perpetual Succour. The socially distant production will bring holiday cheer to London audiences this December. He is coached by Gary Edward Hollywood at Capital Swim Club, Wellington. She’s nothing like Angela Lansbury in the film, thank God – much as I love Lansbury, playing working-class characters who are not music-hall caricatures is not her greatest strength, and every note of her performance in the film rings false.
The production closed two weeks ago. Dan Crawford was director. And that might not be a problem if there was anything inspired about Nigel Harman’s direction, but there isn’t. The annual festival will present two musicals, one new and one revival: Tim Firth’s This Is My Family, about a 13-year-old boy who wins a magazine competition for a dream holiday anywhere in the world, starring James Nesbitt, Sheila Hancock, and Clare Burt, under the direction of Daniel Evans; and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic American musical Oklahoma! Arthur Miller‘s 1980 play The American Clock, subtitled ‘A Vaudeville’, was a fast flop in its original Broadway production. Burt, along with the writers, treads a very careful line – the material is unabashedly sentimental, and in the wrong hands the whole show could easily turn to treacle – and their softly-softly, subtle approach pays huge dividends.
Christopher Fitzgerald makes his UK debut in the title role. Muscato works very hard indeed, and it isn’t his fault, but unfortunately it’s this performance that holes the show below the waterline.
